COMMUNITY SERVICE & RESTITUTION

Community Service - In 1980, the legislature enacted statutes permitting municipal courts to impose community service work as a sentencing alternative. The Dayton Municipal Court began its program in 1981. Since then, the program has provided this viable sentencing tool to the judges. Offenders are court ordered to perform a designated number of work hours at qualified public and non-profit agencies either in lieu of fines or incarceration or as a rehabilitative method to return services to the communities which have been impacted by criminal offenses. The program strives to identify and assist programs which demonstrate the greatest impact towards improving the quality of life in the neighborhoods which these agencies serve.

Some of the most active agencies receiving the benefits of this labor pool are: Paul Lawrence Dunbar House, Urban Ministries, Goodwill, Salvation Army, IMA Food Pantry, and Bulk Waste Pickup.

Since its inception over 21,000 persons have completed more than 585,000 hours of community service.

Restitution - This is a court mandated initiative to monetarily compensate individuals victimized by crime. This sanction serves to impress upon offenders the often negative personal economic impact resulting from their criminal actions against persons or property. Since 1983 this program has compensated over 8,500 persons more than 1.1 million dollars.

For additional information on these two programs call the Community Service Coordinator at 333-4398.
