PAC (People Addiction Choices)
People Addiction Choices which is referred to as the PAC Program, is a tent-week education program, designed to provide intervention for the abusive drinker on supervised probation. The abusive drinker would include what the American Psychological Association would classify as the Habitual Excessive Drinker, (an individual who becomes intoxicated more than 12 times a year) and the Episodic Excessive Drinker (an individual who is intoxicated more than five times a year). The PAC Program is not a treatment program and does not provide the long term structure required by an alcohol-dependent person.
The target population is abusive/problem drinkers who, due to their drinking patterns have become involved with the court system and have had at least one alcohol-related offense; or those individuals who demonstrate problematic drinking or drug-abuse behaviors.
If during the course of the ten-week education series, dependency issues surface, the individual is referred for further evaluation and treatment placement.
It should be noted that reading and writing skills at a high school level are not essential requirements to enter the program, as the class offers several learning modalities in an effort to provide an interesting and informative platform from which to present major alcohol issues.
Placement in the PAC Program is made through the respective Probation Officers and by court order. Since PAC's inception 3-26-99, the Program has expanded to include classes on marijuana, crack, cocaine, and heroin. The classes are held in-house weekly for 1-1/2 hours.
