The Dayton Municipal Court Probation Department maintains the premise that the shaping of our future is an ongoing journey consistent with a vision of community justice. The inherent challenge is to adequately address the needs of victims while providing the necessary components which are essential in rehabilitating offenders. Developing and maintaining partnerships with the public, private and community groups continue to assist in achieving the mission of maintaining a pro-active approach to the increasing demands placed upon the criminal justice system

The Probation Department's primary responsibility is to provide support services for the judiciary of the Dayton Municipal Court. The preparation of pre-sentence investigations continues to be a priority function of probation officers. Judges order the investigation after guilt is established in certian cases. The completed pre-sentence report contains information and input from victims as well as extensive background information pertaining to offenders. Judges review the report as one tool used in the determination of imposing final sentences.

Probation Officers are also responsible for providing services to offenders placed on probation by the court. Additionally, maintaining contact with victims is an important function of probation officers. A great deal of time is used for on-going counseling, tracking and making referrals to various Probation Department In-House programs.
